I started to exhibit and sell my work three years ago, as a means to justify my passions for painting. Since then, I have been up to my elbows in acrylics, pursuing these passions full-time. Landscapes, trees and songbirds are the focus in most of my work. Growing up on the outskirts of Kingston, Ontario, I was captivated by the natural world and used it as a starting point for many of my pieces.
My landscapes often begin with photos from nature, and although representational, evolve from a specific place into something less literal. In addition to photos, inspiration often comes from tiny glimpses of scenery that are scribbled on scraps of paper in the car while headed out of the city. Colour, composition and brushwork all play key roles in my painting process. Significant time and effort is spent in finding an ideal hue, while paying attention to the layout and balance of the finished product.
I attended Brock University where I obtained my Bachelor of Fine Art at Brock. For the final year of the program I enrolled at Queen’s University and travelled abroad. Following graduation, I completed a post-graduate course in Advanced Illustration at Sheridan College where I further explored a variety of different mediums.
Within my Kingston studio my work is moving forward with one piece progressing into the next. My reference photos and sketches act as reminders of nearby places often forgotten or taken for granted. Small scale works act as the catalysts for the development of larger works. As my works have grown and evolved I have become even more fascinated with the potential for delving into new projects and finding new directions still, as yet, undiscovered.
